Your Andy Reid, Kansas City Chiefs, Big Charlie’s Shirts

While Eagles fans grew tired of Big Red several years ago, Kansas City Chiefs fans are by and large, very happy to have him.

Nothing makes Reid look better than Romeo Crennel.

In any case, my friends over at Big Charlie’s in South Philly and Philly Screen have a brand new Reid-centric Chiefs shirt available that I figured I’d share with you. The shirt was designed by Joseph Pekula, you can find out more about him HERE.

You can buy them at the BIG CHARLIE’S ONLINE STORE.

While you’re at it, visit the fine folks at Big Charlie’s Saloon at 11th and McKean (right near Snyder). You don’t have to be a Chiefs fan. The beer is cheap and the people are nice. That’s not their official motto, it’s just the truth.

The Degenerate: Week 13, The Friday Pick – Da Bears

Today’s post is going to be short and sweet. I didn’t have time to write up a manifesto this week, but I did make a pick.

Is this the end of the road for Andy?

Last night.. well last night was a debacle. Vince Young threw four INT’s, Marshawn Lynch and Tarvaris Jackson shredded the Eagles defense and the Eagles dropped another one 31-14. And the icing on the cake, a late 4th quarter pick six from Vince Young put the game over the 43.5 total and we lost our Thursday pick. Terrible night all around. Shady played ok, but that’s about the extent of the good news from the Seattle game.

I think now’s the time to jump on the “lose them all and get a high draft pick” bandwagon. Next week the Eagles go to Miami, so we might actually steal a win there. Just what we need, finishing like 7-9, not making the playoffs and getting a 15-20 slotted draft pick. Just lose out, finish 4-12 and get a top 5 pick, please? Can you do that for me Andy?

Onto the Sunday pick.

Pick #1 (a.k.a The “Tyler Palko vs. Caleb Hanie, seriously?” pick) Chicago Bears -7 over KC Chiefs

Caleb Hanie? I loved you in Good Will Hunting.

This week was tough to handicap. Lots of weird lines. Patriots laying 21 to Colts? I know that Pats will win, and probably win big, but laying 21 points? I’m not sure about that. That seems like a backdoor cover waiting to happen.

Saints giving seven points to the Lions? I’d say without Suh the Lions defense would have a tough time shutting down Brees. And it’s in New Orleans, so that makes you lean even more to the Saints. But Eli threw for almost 400 yards, I know alot was in garbage time, but still. Stafford and Calvin Johnson could have a big day. I’m staying away.

Then I focused on the Bears / Chiefs game. All signs would make you think that taking the seven points in a game of bad QB’s would be the play. The QB situation is a mess for both teams. For Chicago, Jay Cutler is out for the season with a broken hand, so in steps playoff hero (almost) Caleb Hanie. But after his showing last week against the Raiders (two TD’s, three INT’s) don’t fault the Bears fans for jumping off the bandwagon so soon.

Tyler! Do NOT throw the ball!

But on the other hand, the Chiefs are in a similar boat with Tyler Palko. He has started the last two games, and in those games? How about zero TD’s and six INT’s. Kansas City signed Kyle Orton last week, and there are rumors that he will be playing this week. Will he pass along the secrets of the Bears offense and defense (ala Kevin Kolb vs. the Eagles)? Maybe, he did play in Chicago, but that was 3 years ago (2008). Orton is a better QB, but is he ready to step in and lead the Chiefs after a week? I’d say no, not yet. But if Palko starts cold I wouldn’t be surprised if Orton got some snaps.

I’m still liking the Bears in this one. I think a combination of a bad Chiefs offense and a strong Bears defense will be enough to shut down KC on Sunday.

Chicago is 5th in defensive efficiency, KC is 30th in offensive efficiency. I think the Chiefs will have a hard time scoring points on Sunday against the Bears. In their last four games they have scored three, ten, three and nine points. That’s pretty bad. Now they go on the road to Chicago. And oh yeah, it’s going to be in the 30’s on Sunday with a 40% chance of snow at Soldier Field.

This should play well into the Bears plan. I expect alot of Matt Forte on Sunday. I know the Caleb Hanie experiment didn’t work out too well last week, but the Bears remember how good he played in the NFC Championship game, so he has the talent. Maybe coming back home will help.

The Chiefs defense is ranked 21st (18th against the run, 27th against the pass). So Matt Forte 1st, Caleb Hanie play action passing 2nd, would be a decent game plan.

Expect lots of Forte on Sunday

Forte’s numbers haven’t been too good since his huge game against the Eagles in Week 9, but I expect him to break out against a bad Chiefs defense.

And then there’s Devin Hester. The true wildcard, he could break one and get a special teams TD, or at least set up the Bears offense with great field position.

I think all the signs (bad QB’s, good Chicago D, snow, Forte) point to a low scoring game, with the Bears dominating on defense, and letting Matt Forte do his thing. I expect Caleb Hanie to have a decent game, maybe even throw a TD. We’ll see some field goals, maybe a defensive TD thrown in for good measure.  This game opened at Chicago -9, and has dropped to -7, so the price is right. And if you have a line of -7, do yourself a favor and buy it down to 6.5, if you can.

How about the Monsters of the Midway show up in the snow and knock off the Chiefs. I’ll say Bears win 24-10.

Also, I’m seeing 64% of pointspread action going to the Chiefs and you know what, I like that. I’ve been riding the public too much this season, I’m happy to make a pick that goes against the popular opinion.

Let’s get it done on Sunday.

The Line: Chicago -7, O/U 37.5
The Pick: Chicago -7

So, who is the bigger 2011 disappointment, the Eagles or the Phillies?

The Degenerate: Week 11, MNF pick – Just Bet The Patriots

Well, another loser on Sunday. Not just an average loss, but a ‘blow the doors out’ loss. We had UNDER 48 in the Carolina / Detroit game. Final score? Well, I’m glad you asked, how about 45-38 Detroit. Nice.

For Amusement Purposes Only, right?

It pretty much went the exact opposite of what I wrote up:

  • The Carolina defense isn’t very good. But with Stafford limited and the rushing game missing it’s #1 guy, I think Detroit will try to play a conservative gameplan.” – 5 passing TD’s from Matt Stafford. Slightly incorrect.
  • I fully believe that the Detroit defense will shut down a pretty good Carolina offense.” – LOL, Carolina put up 35 points.

Well, let’s put yesterday’s pick behind us and pretend it never happened. And yes, the Eagles won, and I’m #ALLIN, but I need to wait another week before jumping back into the playoff hysteria.

Onto the Monday Night pick…

Monday Night Football: Chiefs at Patriots

Tonight we have Kansas City visiting New England. We’ve been burned by KC on Monday Night before. On Halloween night, Phillip Rivers blew a perfect chance for a push and fumbled in the red zone late in the 4th quarter, KC ended up winning in OT. Screw Phillip Rivers. But the good news for us tonight is that Tom Brady is not Phillip Rivers. Brady has a better arm, better weapons and a model girlfriend. He won’t blow this one for us.

Wll this be a big night for Welker?

As far as I can see it tonight is not going to be a good night for KC, this one could get ugly.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not a fan of the Patriots. Not since that 2004/05 Super Bowl when they beat the Eagles. And then there was that smugfest 2007 undefeated regular season. Add to that the cocky Boston fans and the media’s love affair with Tom Brady, well it all adds up.

But I do know one thing, love or hate the Patriots you have to admit Bill Belichek knows how to win. And I think in a position like the Patriots are in tonight, they will come out firing and win this game going away. They have the offensive weapons to put a bad teams away early.

New England has had a pretty tough schedule the past five weeks, vs. Jets, vs. Dallas, @Pittsburgh, vs. Giants, @Jets. Tonight they get a breather.

The Chiefs have really come back to earth since they ran off a 4 game winning streak after starting 0-3. They’ve lost 2 in a row, 31-3 to Miami, and 17-10 to the Tebows. They’re now going on the road after 3 straight home games.

All trends are pointing to the Chiefs in this one; Kansas City is 5-0 ATS in their last five games as underdogs and 11-2 ATS in their last 13 games when getting 10.5+ points. The Pats are 3-15 ATS in their last 18 games when favored by 10+ points (via Covers.com).

It's on you, Palko

But those trends don’t factor in one important detail about tonight, Chiefs QB Matt Cassel is out, and Tyler Palko is making his first NFL start. The Patriots knocked off the Jets last week 37-16 and they seem like they are ready to put the division away. Tonight should be an easy win, and a game that Patriots should control from start to finish.

We are looking at a KC team going on the road after 2 home losses, KC is ranked 30th (out of 32) in overall team efficiency, and 30th overall in pass defense. Brady should have his way with that defense tonight.

The Patriots are #4 overall, and #2 in overall offense and #2 in pass offense. Yes, the Patriots are low ranked in defense (23rd) but I think Belichek will be able to draw up some schemes to confuse Palko.

I’m not going to get fancy, I’m not going to say Tyler Palko will find a way to beat the Patriots, I’m not going to say that the Chiefs defense will magically shut down Tom Brady. I’m going with the obvious play here, I’m laying the 16.5 with New England (for amusement purposes only, to be clear).

I’m thinking Brady and Welker have a big night, the Patriots defense gives Tyler Palko a rude NFL introduction and New England gets a big win in front of the home crowd. Patriots win 34-10.

Going 0-3 this week would really suck, and drop me to .500 on the season. Help me, Tom Brady. You’re my only hope.

Thanksgiving picks post coming Wednesday.

The Degenerate: Week 8 MNF: Stay Classy, San Diego

What a win last night. Wow. There’s nothing more fun that slapping around the Cowboys. Especially on national TV. Birds looked good, 2nd place with a bullet. Bears and Cardinals in the next 2 weeks, then it’s a showdown with the Giants for 1st

Yo Cowboys, Why U Mad?

place. Hope you all got in your ‘Eagles to win the NFC East’ bet when it was +300 or +240. New odds come out tomorrow, I think we’ll see the Eagles as the 2nd choice. My quick guess: Giants +120, Eagles +150, Cowboys +200, Washington +500.

1-1 yesterday, lost on the Ravens -12, won on the Eagles UNDER. Still hitting at 9-3 in the last 12, so still in the black (for amusement purposes only).

Enough about Sunday, let’s get onto the Monday night pick, Chargers at Chiefs…

I guess if you’re from Kansas City or San Diego, or if you were a fan of the old AFL, then this game really strikes a chord. But I’m from Philadelphia, and I shot my ‘big game, huge rivalry’ load last night with the Birds blasting the Cowboys out of the Linc. But alot of people are foaming at the mouth for this one, and I respect a true rivalry. These team hate each other from way back.  This one is a rematch from Week 4 when KC went out to San Diego as 14 point dogs and almost pulled the upset. Chargers managed a tight 20-17 win.

Well, here we are four weeks later and the line is Chargers -3, a huge adjustment from the first game.

When I handicap I like to look at past games to see who a team has played to get where they are at. In this case, KC started

Obligatory Halloween image...

0-3 with some ugly losses and looked to headed for the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes. But they’ve run off three wins in a row and now stand at 3-3 and only a game out of 1st place. But lets look closer at those three wins. Week 4 they beat Minnesota 22-17, Week 5 they beat the Colts 28-24 and Week 6 they beat the Raiders 28-0. Only the Raiders win is worth anything and I’m discounting that because it was their first game with Carson Palmer and Palmer and Kyle Boller managed to throw six INT’s. Also in that game they pitched a 28-0 shutout but got out-gained by 82 total yards (getting 2 pick-sixes will do that).

If we look at the Chargers, they stand at 4-2 and in 1st place but have only beaten Minnesota (2-6), KC (3-3), Miami (0-7) and Denver (2-5), with losses to New England and the Jets. So the Chargers are really in the same boat as KC. No real impressive wins on either side. I mean they both beat Minnesota at home by pretty much the same score (KC 24-17, SD 22-17). While San Diego lost to New England on the road they did play them tough for 3 quarters, and they were in the Jets game for the whole game on the road too, so they proved that they can play good teams tight on the road. So I’ll give that some weight.

Cassel v. Rivers. Who ya got?

In a game that is a true toss-up I’m going with San Diego -3 to get the win and cover in Kansas City on Monday Night. The Chargers get alot of flack for never winning the big games, for starting slow, for managing to lose winnable games, etc. But they have talent, at least on offense. Love or hate him Phillip Rivers is pretty good. And he throws to Vincent Jackson and Antonio Gates. They have a decent running game with Ryan Mathews and Mike Tolbert (questionable for tonight). KC has Matt Cassel, Dwayne Bowe and a hodge podge of RB’s filling in for injured Jamal Charles (Jackie Battle, Dexter McCluster, Thomas Jones). I think the Chargers get it done. This is a must win for them, and I think they get it.

KC does have a home field advantage, one of the biggest in the league. They’re 8-2 at home in their last 10 games at Arrowhead, and they beat San Diego at home last season, on Monday Night, so that did factor in my decision.

FootballOutsiders.com has them as almost dead even. According to FO, the Chargers are #14 on offense, #26 on Defense, and KC is #25 on offense, #15 on defense. So this game is a true tossup. But I’m looking at this as a matchup of talent and skill players and I think San Diego has the edge. Better QB, better RB’s, better WR/TE combo. I also think they remember Week 4, they will be ready and not get caught sleeping like they did four weeks ago. The better talent wins, and I think the Chargers have the better talent.

I’m saying Norv goes on the road, into hostile Arrowhead Stadium and gets a win to take sole possession of 1st place in the AFC West. Chargers 27 Chiefs 17.

The Line: Chargers -3,  O/U 44.5
The Pick: Chargers -3

I’ll give you all one more day to soak in the Cowboys win last night, then it’s onto next Monday Night against Da Bears.
