Sixers vs. Blazers 12.26.11 Open Game Thread

Well, I’ve never had one of these before. Everyone else does them, so I figured I’d give it a try. If it works, we’ll do it every game.

As the Sixers opener vs. the Blazers progresses, leave your comments on the game here, as if you don’t know what a game thread is.

  • Spike Eskin

Let’s get it started with game predictions: I actually don’t like this matchup for us. I’m going with 97-91 Blazers.

  • http://twitter.com/Zazmania Corey

Sixers win a sloppy one 92-84, Elton Brands gonna have a big game

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PZZWAEUBBDVAVFSBKTYQT5XN2E B B

Sixers win 96-92, looking for a big game from Jrue.

  • http://twitter.com/jakepavorsky Jake Pavorsky

I actually do like the Sixers here. I’m gonna go 88-82. Think your guy of the night is Lou Williams. Really, really like what he brought last season and in the preseason off the bench

  • Mwerb6

Sixers 101 blazers 97. Lamarcas Aldridge goes for 25 and 15 but it isn’t enough

  • http://twitter.com/cranekicker CK

Jodie Meeks all day erry day.

  • http://twitter.com/cranekicker CK

    (also #FreeBoosie)

  • http://twitter.com/Jburke1217 Joe Burke

    Sixers 98-Blazers 87
    Jrue dominates………

  • Tgisondi

I’ll take the Sixers, 95-93, just because its the opener and I’m a homer. Brand 18-12.

  • Spike Eskin

Haha, I wanted to take the Sixers, I just figured since the Blazers didn’t change much, they’re at home, and the game @ Portland was rough last year, this was an L. Not a bad L though.

  • http://twitter.com/_magowan Mark Magowan

Blazers 101 – Sixers 88. Sorry, no perfect season.

  • Matt Dering

Spencer Hawes brings up tax policy during the game.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Gallen/31702275 Patrick Gallen

    POR 109, PHI 104.

  • Spike Eskin

If the Sixers lose, I’m going to spend most of Tuesday fighting off the “see, it’s the same old Sixers” people on Twitter.

  • http://bigkmedia.weebly.com/ Matt Kasznel

Blazers 95, Sixers 88. Portland strong at all the same spots we are, and they’ve got the 2 best players in this game.

    • Spike Eskin

Ok, I’ll bite. The two best players, so LMA and Wallace?

      • http://www.twitter.com/mkasznel Matt Kasznel

Yeah. I’ve always had a soft spot for Wallace, though, so that might be blinding me a bit on the “Iggy v. Wallace” thing considering how GW played the first half of last year.

        • Spike Eskin

I like Wallace too. I think it’s probably close.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Gallen/31702275 Patrick Gallen

To be fair, I think they go 3-2 on this trip.

    • Spike Eskin

Yeah, I’ve got 3-2. Though, 2-3 is understandable. But I really think it’d be great for them to come back 3-2.

  • Bobby Digital

These teams are so similar, and have so many of the same parts…Lou Williams/Jamal Crawford, Iggy/Gerald Wallace, Brand/Aldridge. Both also solid PG’s (Felton & Jrue). Blazers have the home court tonight, so Ill give them a slight edge in a tight low scoring one. 92-90

  • nick stasiak

i think the Sixers win this one 93-87 and go 3-2 on this road trip

  • Joe_nelson0

I’m taking the Blazers, 95-86…no answer for Aldridge.

  • @Mikebiff

98-90 Sixers- They seem to have a knack for getting up for bigger games and tough opponents, if they play this season like they played last season. I’m expecting that they are looking at this season-opening west coast swing as a challenge, and I think they’ll be up for it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=715066933 Nate Parks

I am seeing a close game. I expect an honest defensive effort from our sixers but I dont see them winning tonight. I see a close game though. somewhere in the area of a 93-90 or 96-92 win by the blazers. I see a 2-3 start with a few very close single low single digit losses. I see a sixers team that should have a ton of heart. Go Sixers!

  • @MattyRadz

I like Portland’s offense too much. I see Aldridge dropping 28 inside on a Sixers soft interior. We needed Sammy D back. I say blazers win this one 99-90 but I see the Sixers going 3-2 on the opening road trip.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/AndreFowler Ghost of Andrew Toney

    Sixers win 2-0

  • @MattyRadz
  • http://twitter.com/TheBSLine Roy Burton

I actually like the 76ers a lot in this one: 103-89. The Blazers beat us the last time we played in Portland, but Iguodala didn’t play in that one, so that counts for something.

    • Spike Eskin

      Definitely counts for something.

      • #MattyRadz

nah it doesn’t really…blazers are a different team with different circumstances

  • http://twitter.com/AliNotAlli Ali Lerman

I’m taking the Sixers all day. 97-94 #FreeBoosie

  • http://twitter.com/WarrenCroxton Warren Croxton

Sixers win by 3, Jrue with a big three at the end. Aldridge goes for 28 and 12 in the loss.

  • Spike Eskin

Is it strange that I’m kind of nervous?

  • http://twitter.com/chrisjohnsonjr Chris Johnson

101-93 Sixers win. Then I’m going to McDonalds for a burger.

    • Spike Eskin

      Wait. Why?

      • http://twitter.com/chrisjohnsonjr Chris Johnson

Doesn’t 100 points get everyone a free burger?

        • Spike Eskin

Hahaha, only at the WFC I think.

  • Spike Eskin

    Also, #FreeBoosie

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1171826914 Rob Greco

we win if spencer hawes does this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POE08YOtjMg

    • Spike Eskin

I would really rather Spencer not try that! Hahah

  • Drewdjh

And it begins!!! let’s go Sixers!! All star year for Jruuuuue!

  • http://twitter.com/WarrenCroxton Warren Croxton

I will run through a brick wall for Doug Collins.

  • http://twitter.com/chrisjohnsonjr Chris Johnson

Who does Rasheed Wallace root for here?

    • Spike Eskin

Whichever team has the best weed.

  • Spike Eskin

Who scores the first bucket for the Sixers?

  • @Mikebiff

Damn, settle down fellas, settle down

  • http://twitter.com/WarrenCroxton Warren Croxton

EB can hit that jumper with his eyes closed.

    • Spike Eskin

He doesn’t miss from 15 feet.

  • Spike Eskin

Well so that was a jittery start.

  • http://twitter.com/WarrenCroxton Warren Croxton

Why does Nicholas Batum wear 88?

    • Spike Eskin

heard he’s a huge Lindros fan

    • http://twitter.com/theRobGreco Rob Greco

      because he’s french

    • Bobby Digital

Nicolas Batum will wear No. 88 next season (assuming he makes the roster). It’s a bit of a strange number for a basketball player to choose (or to at least have assigned to you). He has worn No. 8 before (though he currently wears No. 5 for Le Mans), so maybe No. 88 is a takeoff of that. It’s a common number for a tight end, but for a basketballer? In fact, according to Basketball Reference.com, Antoine Walker is the only NBA player to have ever worn No. 88, and that was only for one season. So if nothing else, Nic Batum will be an original.

      • Spike Eskin

Remember when we almost traded Iggy for him?

        • Bobby Digital

Hahaha. They’ve “almost traded” Iggy for every player in the league at this point

  • http://www.twitter.com/mkasznel Matt Kasznel

Marcus Camby and his lack of knees vs. Spencer Hawes and his Spencer Hawes-y knees is going to be an entertaining matchup.

  • http://twitter.com/WarrenCroxton Warren Croxton

First down it goes from Zumoff of the year on the Iggy 3.

  • http://twitter.com/Jburke1217 Joe Burke

defense looks really soft to start. no hands up and very sloppy on switches

  • http://twitter.com/Jburke1217 Joe Burke

NO POINTS IN THE [PAINT. NONE

  • http://twitter.com/theRobGreco Rob Greco

i guess herb magee doesn’t do foul shooting

  • http://twitter.com/philliephan88 Dave

Well it can only get better from here, am I right?

  • Spike Eskin

1st quarter: looked jittery. Too many jumpers. Hawes is still Hawes.

  • http://www.twitter.com/mkasznel Matt Kasznel

I remember going to Herb Magee’s summer hoops camp as a kid and watching an early 60’s Magee just drain shot after shot from everywhere. Dude’s ridiculous. I’ll bet he could still play the Dell Curry role if the Sixers offered him a contract today.

  • http://twitter.com/theRobGreco Rob Greco

spencer is passing and (not) rebounding just like a point guard! look out jrue!

  • @Mikebiff

Someone explain why they’re trying to play so fast…..

  • http://twitter.com/Jburke1217 Joe Burke

    Evan turner looks awesome

    • Spike Eskin

      He does look great.

  • Bobby Digital

Portland “soccer moms” (as Simmons would say) are definitely living up to their rep as one of the best crowds in the league

    • Spike Eskin

Great fans there and in Golden State.

  • http://twitter.com/WarrenCroxton Warren Croxton

I legit feel sorry for Greg Oden.

    • Spike Eskin

Yeah, and you have to wonder how long he keeps trying.

  • http://twitter.com/jakepavorsky Jake Pavorsky

Extremely, extremely sloppy ball. Never got into a groove

  • Spike Eskin

So here’s the big question, how long till the Evan starts, and we trade Williams for help up front and a backup point guard thing happens?

    • http://twitter.com/WarrenCroxton Warren Croxton

Does Lou have any trade value?

  • Spike Eskin

With as bad and sloppy as that half was, this is a game the SIxers can win. Buckle down on the defensive boards and don’t turn it over 9 times again.

  • KevinKelly

the 2nd quarter Sixers is the team i was expecting to see from the start as long as they play like that theyre gonna be fun to watch

  • http://twitter.com/theRobGreco Rob Greco

we’re down by 4. was it a “we’ve played this bad and we’re only down four. just wait until we play well” half or a “looking this bad is a bad sign of things to come” half?

  • http://twitter.com/WarrenCroxton Warren Croxton

Obviously Spencer Hawes is playing like Steve Hawes. MVP MVP MVP

  • http://twitter.com/CrazyCurtPhilly Curtis Simmons

what’s everyone think of Rose commenatry?

    • Spike Eskin

Think he’s doing a good job actually.

    • http://twitter.com/WarrenCroxton Warren Croxton

I actually haven’t mind him except the corny Iggy has sufficent funds in the bank comment after he banked it in.

  • @standoutstar

hey spike, it’s me @standoutstar. what r ur thots so far?

  • http://twitter.com/austinrosen Austin Rosen

With Lopez hurt, if Turner and Jrue both take a huge step up, and Philly becomes a good destination, is there any chance in hell that we could put together a package for Howard around Iguodala?

    • Spike Eskin

No. I don’t think you get Howard without giving up Holiday and or Turner. I think you have a better chance of Howard lasting the year in Orlando and trying to sign him, and that’s not very good either.

    • http://twitter.com/austinrosen Austin Rosen

I legitimately think nobody could score on us if we added Dwight to this squad, I don’t know if we could get the cap room, or pitch that he could turn this squad into a contender, but if we want a title chance, we gotta do whatever it takes to try and pull him here. Looking around the league, I don’t know what other contending team would be able to fit him. Is New Jersey a better destination? Will the Lakers be good in 2 years? I’m probably just dreaming though, haha.

  • @Mikebiff

Collins loses me more and more every time he draws up plays for Iggy. I don’t get it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an Iguodala hater. Drawing up plays for Iguodala with 5 seconds on shot clock or 10 on game clock irks me the same way as when I see Reid calling pass plays on 3rd or 4th and 1 for the last decade. Having Iggy take those shots is the worst thing a coach could do to this team.

    • @Mikebiff

And just because he banked in a 30 foot 3 pointer doesn’t make it right. Iguodala fails in that spot 98% of the time

  • CJ

Jrue must’ve heard everyone’s high expectations for him. SO SLOPPY thus far.

  • http://twitter.com/TheBSLine Roy Burton

Thad, ET and Lou were the only bench guys to see action in the first half. I know there are matchup considerations to worry about, but it’s something to keep an eye on.

  • Jnew4

Jrue needs to calm down. He looks outta sync.

    • Spike Eskin

      Agreed

  • http://twitter.com/joe_pa90 Joe Pa

Why did Oden restructure his deal ? If I was him I would have taken that money and ran or limped.

    • Spike Eskin

Did he? I thought he just signed the one year 8.8 million dollar deal they offered.

      • http://twitter.com/joe_pa90 Joe Pa

Yea he agreed to restructure after his last setback. I guess he is the only pro athlete alive with a conscience

        • Spike Eskin

He’s made a bunch of money, and barely played. They’ve always done right by him. I’m sure they’ll get him his money.

  • http://twitter.com/joe_pa90 Joe Pa

Spencer has a prettier jump shot than Iggy

  • http://twitter.com/Jburke1217 Joe Burke

    No Defense

  • @Mikebiff

it feels like they should be down by 25+

    • http://twitter.com/joe_pa90 Joe Pa

Hanging around. They got alligator blood

  • http://twitter.com/theRobGreco Rob Greco

three assists until the triple double for spencer. we just saw him force his first pass there. expect more to come.

    • Spike Eskin

If Hawes gets a triple double and we DON’T win that’s a bad sign.

  • http://www.twitter.com/mkasznel Matt Kasznel

Is that Zumoff’s first “in rhythm” of the year? Was always one I picked up on. Favorite was when he’d say it about Derrick Coleman once a year.

    • Spike Eskin

Yep. I believe that was it.

  • http://twitter.com/WarrenCroxton Warren Croxton

Who’s going to take the final shot when this comes down to the final possession?

    • http://www.twitter.com/mkasznel Matt Kasznel

      Iggy…*sigh*

      • Spike Eskin

It’ll be Lou, but I don’t think it’ll come down to that.

  • http://twitter.com/joe_pa90 Joe Pa

    Just like that

    • Spike Eskin

      Every time!

  • Spike Eskin

Spencer Hawes just shot a three. I’m going to quit watching basketball this year.

  • Spike Eskin

Lou Williams at his worst this 4th quarter.

  • @Heirjones

Theyre just hitting EVERY open shot. What can ya do?

  • http://twitter.com/joe_pa90 Joe Pa

    More flopping than soccer

  • http://twitter.com/theRobGreco Rob Greco

Jrue looks terrible. 4 turnovers, 2 assists and some pretty bad defense.

  • Heirjones

Brand and Hawes are clearly tired. Short on jumpers. Doug might wanna consider using Vuc early in the game, for 2-4 min. Something. But nice shooting, Iggy! (Don’t hear that oft… Ever)

  • Spike Eskin

Guys, I’m in Twitter jail and Andre Iguodala is going HAM.

  • http://twitter.com/WarrenCroxton Warren Croxton

    Comeeeee on. Make it interesting

  • Spike Eskin

I will say this about this game, they had plenty of opportunity to pack it in, and they haven’t. That’s something right?

    • http://twitter.com/joe_pa90 Joe Pa

Well this was still better than no basketball.

  • Spike Eskin

The Sixers won’t win games turning the ball over 20 times.

  • @Mikebiff

    Looooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

  • Spike Eskin

    No way, right?

  • @Mikebiff

    Loooooooooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

  • http://twitter.com/theRobGreco Rob Greco

craig brackens looks so upset on the bench

  • @Mikebiff

Who the hell does Iguodala think he is!?!?

    • http://twitter.com/theRobGreco Rob Greco

      lou williams

  • http://twitter.com/WarrenCroxton Warren Croxton

    Ugh. Call Timeout Doug!

  • Mattb

Tough loss. Very surprised to see Jrue get off to such a slow start. Way too many turnovers. Jody Meeks barely played and as good as the bench is we need a viable threat from 3 in that starting group.
